Trends in Equal Employment Policies Every Business Should Be Practicing

The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is taking employers to task. Between its newly-enacted Strategic Enforcement Plan and other workplace-related initiatives, the EEOC is ensuring that companies are abiding by the anti-discrimination laws that the agency is required to enforce.

Join EEOC presenter Mary Tiernan, who manages the Philadelphia District Office's outreach and public affairs program and Eric Meyer, a management-side employment lawyer, to learn about where the commission is focusing its efforts, including areas such as social media and background checks and the best practices your business, large or small, should implement to avoid agency scrutiny.

Presenters:

  • Eric Meyer, Partner, Labor and Employment Group, Dilworth Paxson LLP
  • Mary Tiernan, Program Analyst, Philadelphia District Office's Outreach and Public Affairs Program Manager, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission

Arts and Business Event

Zero to One with Peter Thiel,
Co-Founder of Paypal

Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future

Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal and the first outside investor of Facebook, will join the Arts + Business Council on to discuss his new book Zero to One: Notes on a Start-up or How to Build the Future.

Thiel argues that every moment in business happens only once, so we must strive to create something new rather than imitate or improve on the success of the past. The next breakthrough startup won’t be another Facebook or Apple. Instead, startups must pioneer unknown territories; producing real value for themselves, their investors and future generations.

Zero to One asks founders to contemplate seven key questions before undertaking a new venture. These include taking a close look at your people, technology and timing; with the idea that getting one of these wrong at the outset can doom a startup before it's even begun. The event will also feature a panel of local experts discussing their own experiences as they relate to Zero to One.

Panelists to Date:

  • Jon Gosler, Founder of Market Atlas and Partner, Third Cohort Capital
  • Richard Vague, Managing Partner, Gabriel Investments

Moderator:

  • Zack Seward, Editor in Chief, Technical.ly
